Feedback Analysis of Final Designs

Front cover

Friday, 24 April 2009

• How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my audiences by offering a different spin on a music magazie. Through my solgan ive made it a Lifestyle magazine but focussing on music fashion and life. this way it offers more than just a music magazine, this therefore is like buying three magazines in one but without the price tag giving readers a good buy. Through my front cover ive used vibrant colours that stand out such as the lipstick on Emilys face to project her pose as attitude. I made sure that eye contact was held to the camera giving interact with the magazine and its audience providing attractiveness. I used a bold, stand out font in order to make it "jump off the shelves". The title itself "One Way" is short and carries good slogans that ive used like "leading you on the right path in music"
• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Through having background knowlege of photoshop from the preliminary task i was able to go into this task with confidence and an understanding of what and where i was going. Through this task i used numerous tools on photoshop but found the most effective and well used tool was the magnetic lassoo tool allowing me to cut objects out and place them onto different backgrounds in order for them to stand out. During this task i learnt and explored the different varietys of text and how to add effects on them to make practically anything you want. As i showed in screen shots that some texts i created using complex effects but didnt use them in the end showing how far ive come since the preliminary task. I also got to grips with Adobe InDesign and that helped me create a perfect double page spread with all the custom measurements in place.
• Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression fromit to the full product?
I felt that as i gradually moved from the preliminary task to the full product i familiarized myself with the tool of photoshop and indesign. During the preliminary task i only used a selection of selective tools that i only felt comfortable with and in my own depth. but as we worked up to the full product design i found myself exploring effects in depth and adding them to pictures and fonts. I understood as we got further into the task what the layers actually did and the swatches and channels. I never fully realized the capability of photoshop until i undertook the full product print task.
• Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for my print production as ive already planned would be of the ages 14-30. The pop genre is popular in these ages. Any lower than the age of 14 would restrict the magazine production and would have to appeal to these ages and wouldnt be able to be as sophisticated as ive made it to be. I would use the audience type of abc1 - c2de as magazines are cheap and doesnt often affect the socio-classes of society, yet my magazine would uphold a sophisticated layout attracting the abc1 type class. As i researched earlier that the three largest magazine sales are male magazines, female magazines and tv and entertainment magazines, therefore i came up with the theory to combine all three to broaden the spectrum of who we are appealing to. The magazine wouldnt specifically appeal to the pop soft rock fans and would instead involve other aspects of music features to attract wider audiences. By offering "new music" features every week it offers somethng for everyone to enjoy. with the slogan ive used "music ... life ... style" it offers much more than music appealing to the wider audiences.

• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I belive that my magazine is similiar to a magazine like gq or nme. Its about "music..life..style". A print production company might distribute the magazine, one recognisable to lift it off the ground. due to the toughness of the market place a big company would need to be involved to guarantee a sucsessful print production company. This company would need to have links with the music business to be able to advertise easily ect. a media institution involved in the music buisness already could give the magazine tips on upcoming artists to feature to give them good resources and background knowlege. exclusive and photoshoots will be easier to book with a hand in the music buisness already and the magazine would be able to meet contacts in higher places through this institution. Background resources through institutions such as internet, Tv and newspapers could alsways be a possibility to enhance or even expand the media product, therefore reaching more of an audience by placing it on a broader spectrum to reach out to people.

• How does your media product represent particular social groups?
In my media project i have planned to focus on a particular social group for my magazine, this being pop music lovers. I had to think about the clothes my models would be wearing, the genre of music they represent and the style and layout of the magazine to represent my target aimed social group to attract them to buy it. Firstly my model on the front cover is stylishly dressed, abit eccentric with the oversized gold necklaces and the waistcoat shirt combo which would easily be seen at pop concerts alike. The features listed down the side give off that its a popular music magzine by featuring the top 100 albums you know its a generalized magazine due to its broad spectrum. By calling it one way i aimed it at the younger 14-mid 30's age group as the title sounds fresh and funky giving it a young vibe for the middle class generation. The contents page is filled with pictures of bands and model shot singers giving it that teenage girl vibe which has proved very popular in the music magazine industry.

• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of realmedia products?

Throught this project i have kept to the same stylistic principles as that of authentic print production magazines. Through my research i was able to gather the background infomation and principles of the conventions of media texts in order to replicate and personalize into my own ideas and designs. In this project i have used many conventions that can be seen throughout todays media print works. In the Front cover i have used a bold, stand out masthead that is the ideal of all print productions. A strong image is the centerfold of the front cover and is the main attraction of the front page. By using an attractive girl, its eye catching and graps readers attention. I got my model to look at the camera in order to interact with the camera in a sense so that her eyes are cleary visible giving off interaction. The image overlaps the title which is used throughout magazines monthly, a good example of this is FHM as the logo is clearly world renowned and therefore everybody recognises it as FHM just by the little bit of font on show. Ive used different ways to show the main features of the magazine by using circles which FHM also do and + signs to give readers the sense of "WOW theres more" i.e they think theyre getting more for their money.
In the contents page i had the tile in the top left hand corner, leaving more room to showcase special features onto the page. I used a red and white colourway to produce the title in as i believe it to be the two best striking colours and is used in everyday media marketing such as coca cola as the colours are eye catching and vivid. I cut out a guitair and overlapped the title a little in the corner to give it that quirky vibe and to stopm the page from looking to boxy and simplistic. I found that in most magazines a slogan was produced on the contents page aswell and therefore used a black liner heading underneath to showcase my slogan giving it that proffessional outlook. By doing so this gave me three predominant colours to choose from when designing my contents page, a habit that magazine pages have to keep the page looking professional yet simplistic and attractive. This therefore is the approach i have used in order to create a neat looking page. i have also kept the same font variations evident throughout the page, using the same font for my number pages as my contents title, this gives the page some order. i created boarders for the pictures to go under creating a break up from the white background, this also uses up more space and gives the picture more meaning, something that NME use in their contents page. This effect works well and i kept in conjunction with the colourways that i chose to use. I then boxed out a features column where the main features and others are listed with a short description keeping writing to a minimum therefore placing more focus on the outlook and pictures of the contents page, a general convention for mainstream magazine covers alike.
The double page spread starts off with a large titles again, yet this time i have centered it rather than aligning it to the left. As its a band name i wanted it to create the effect of almost headlining a gig on a music poster. I used a stencil type font to create the title to symbolise stamping their name on the music world, a trait most magazines following by using puns or play on words to symbolise different meanings. I used a black background due to the genre of the music, predominantely being rock music, therefore giving the readers a sense of what they represent. Using red heightens the black and creates a sort of old school punk rock effect vibe which i thought related to the band perfectly. I wrapped the text accordingly around an image i placed in the bottom left hand corner to create a less formal page, i wanted tis image to represent a scruffy look and feel, i placed a white lining around the image to give off the view that it had been glued down to take the page away from its formal state. I stuck with white and red for the text throughout to give a sense of order on the page with the red representing the questions being asked and white the answers. The picture i chose to take up the whole of the other page, magazine features are becoming more like this way as its easier to read and view from a readers point of view. As it splits up the page and therefore doesnt become too cramped and sore on the eyes, this was something i wanted to go for on my contents page but didnt feel it worked for a double page spread. The picture i edited to black and white creating the flag colourful to translate to "the cream of the british crop" therefore recognizing to audiences this is a british band. Also it ties in nicely with the colourways on show therefore blending in well. i feel the blackness of the photo makes it blend in smoothly with the background on the other page a common theme ive found in magazines in the past.

Production of The Main Task

Double page spread

For my double page spread i focussed on a band feature, using one of my brothers friends bands, a well know band called The Dirty Trades in jersey. I wanted to gather natural shots yet not at a big concert, for one this was hard to do and arrange and i felt that it showed the nitty gritty of being in a band. And thats what i would base the article around, up and coming artists and about the hard work and dedication a band would have to put to get into a well-known music magazine. This picture wasnt one that i felt was right for a main picture yet i thought the frontman, Chapman was caught in a good light and you can see his passion for the music and the energy that his putting in to his singing.

i found a really good font called stencil standard which was just the font i had in mind. It gives it a western feel that sort of looks as if its been stamped on. I opted for a black background and went for a red font colour as it gives i a more rock and roll feel to it. The colourways run throughout the page as found in analysing double page spreads for my planning design work. I believe the fancy font that reads "starring" works well in contrast to the purposely bland "Dirty Trades" title.

Here is the end product masthead i lassooed out a guitair to incorporate it into the title to give it a rock and roll feel. On the page i decided to interview Tyrone Chapman the frontman of the band and terefore used a handwriting font to write starring which looks like a movie type picture. I gave the article feature a sub title .. cream of the british crop to incorporate the bands britisness as its a universal magazine therefore giving americans and those alike an idea of where they come from.

This photo i think works extremely well i duplicated it on photoshop then adjusted the saturation of it and then using rubber i rubbed over the british flag to reveal the coloured version behind it. this proves powerful in the final piece and really stand out against the black background placed against. Ive created the band to say theyve just broke into the record charts therefore i took the shots at rehersals to give off a real love for the music. This photo incorporates passion for music and for their country.

I also lassooed the same lad who featured on the front of the magazine, Tyrone Chapman who the article focusses on. I tidies up the lassoo job with a combination of magic wand and the rubber tool in order to gain that glue cut out stick on effect that i wanted to set the page out. I incorporated him on the side to wrap the text around polishing the proffesional finish t0 the magazine.

Production of the Main Task

Contents Page

At first i tried a text that would stand out from the norm, having created it and seeing the final outcome i decided not to use it as it didnt work well with a white background and that what i wanted as the background for the contents page. It also didnt fit into context in what i thought its purpose was for. It was too snazzy and didnt work well with my simplistic ideas of a basic contents page. I felt that i should experiment nonetheless through trial and error to see what works best and what doesnt.

For one of the pictures i had i decided to make something different and brand it as an exclusive, something that i often saw when researching into similiar media texts. These types of words are commonly used in mainstream magazines for example, Heat and Ok these are used as puns to gather the audiences attention and that was my intentions for it to attract the audience to a big feature. This breaks things up from looking plain and dull and adds abit of house style to the creativity.

Putting it on a slant allowed me to be able to "brand" the photograph and its feature making it look realistic and adding to the overall house style of the magazine. By overlapping it with the picture and raterizing the layer it was able to fit nicely in the corner to give off a sense it was a big photoshoot exclusive article which i thought worked out to its advantages.

I decided to cut out a friend from a picture using magnetic lasoo and used it on a small scale to place underneath a basic heading titled Summer festival Special as its a relaxed pose and gives off the feeling of being chilled which is what the summer festival season is all about.. relaxing. And as i stated on my front cover, summer edition it was right to get some summer representation in to my piece, and with a feature being listed as festival guides i thought it was fitting. By zooming in i was able to magic wand and blur effectively in order for it to blend in and not appear to sharp on the contents page.

Here is the final piece .. i used the shape tool and drew a box then rotated it and place two thumbnail images over to mix things up in the way the features where presented. As you can see the exclusive sign works well with the picture that i edited on photoshop .. using the magnetic lasoo tool again to select what i wanted the switched up the gradient of the background and used the lighting effects tool to in effect place a vision of a sun shining. I took inspiration from the gq magazine that i really liked when i researched my media texts .. opting out of the descion in my planning to split the page in half horizontally for pictures and text as it looks better this format blended into one.

Production Of The Main Task

Front Cover

This is the image that i have decided upon for my main image of the front cover. Using one of my friends as a model and using the coinciding schools photography booth this was the end product. I tried to capture many a pose but thought that this stood out as it says attitude and power, something a musical artist nowadays has to obtain to survive.

Using the magnetic lassoo tool on Adobe Photoshop i was able to select Emily herself out of the photo, therefore leaving me to decide what background i could opt for. I then used magic wand to touch up the fin details around her hair ect to get that perfect model look when finalised.

This it the finished title ive opted for, creating two layers of text by duplicating the writing to add a sort of 3d visual effect. I think it works well with the one going down the side and is small an compact so doesnt need too much room yet could easily stand out.

At this stage i had to raterize the title layer and i applied the magic wand tool so that just the writing stuck out with the blue gradient background that i chose.

I created a seperate font to back up the picture of emily, giving her the artist name of ciara, putting gradient overlay and inner shadow on it gave it a 3d goldy effect that matched well with the jewrellery.

This is the finished product, i used custom shape tool to create the circles and squares adding text over it to mix up how the features of the magazine were displayed. The colours all work well with each other keeping thoughout.

Planning of magazine Production
Here are my plans to design my music magazine publication. with these designs ive used the knowlege that i have gained from researching into similiar media texts and also the preliminary task to aid me with my planning.

Front Cover
Here i have used my new found infomation on the codes and conventions of a front cover layout and have incorporated some of these ideals into my own designs. As im not know for my art skills i have used photoshop to block out the rough markings for where i want things to be positioned. As always the title takes center stage at the top, i havent decided to go all the way across the page as i feel my title "One Way" would be abit of a stretch and most magazines such as FHM take up roughly the same amount of room as ive drawn out, leaving space for barcodes and price tags in the upper left hand corner. Having a slogan underneath adds to the advertisement of the magazine and i feel there it can be cleary seen due to the attention the title brings. Ive chosen to have my main picture overlapping my title as it shows that the publication is a recognisable brand therefore i would want to incorporate that into my magazine and it gives it some house style quirkiness about it. I opted for a secondary image also to back up a feature that would be advertised alongside the primary picture. I want the text to overlap the image in some parts neccessary so that the main image isnt segregated too much from the rest of the page.

Contents Page

I wanted the contents page to be crammed with information about whats in the magazine. Through my research ive found that most contents pages use this technique to showcase their magazine as being full to the brim with features and articles. The contents title will be cleary mastheaded at the top of the page aligned to the left to give it a sophisticated approach instead of having it bang in the center. Im opting for 5 or so pictures to fill the space down at the bottom with page number references beside them. I want them to be varying in size, width and height so that theyre mixed up yet keeping them in a smart outlook. I decided to split the page into two the top half belonging to the features that are in the magazine this gives it a larger space to clearly state what articles are beneath the pages of the magazine. Although there is a big space to fill im going to use large fonts for the headings of the features and a short summary of what the features about lasting about 2 small lines taking up a 1/4 of the page.

Double Page Spread

For my double page spread ive decided to opt for something that i didnt see when researching the codes and conventions of an article spread. Ive decided to use the background of the A3 page as an image taken. This image will have to be not too noisy as such to allow for a white font to be cleary visible. This may require adding shadow to images using Adobe Photoshop so that a white text will stand out backed on a black canvas. I also want to apply the feature title over the image aswell so that the image is basically the center stage of the article, therefore it needs to relate to the text well.

Research into Potential Target Audience
With the economy going down prices are rising therefore publications and business' alike are suffering from this credit crunch. This means that people are buying less "indulgences" than they need in order to cut down their expenses. This therefore, as i have found out lead to a 6.7% decrease in the number of magazines bought in the united kingdom in December 2008. This means that when creating my magazine im going to have to place it on a broader spectrum appealing to more than just one type of consumer in order to rake in the profits.

The top 5 magazine audiences are as follows:
1) Womens Magazines
2) Mens Magazines
3) TV, Radio and Entertainment Magazines
4) News weekly magazines
5) Business Magazines

This means that i have a definite audience out there for my music magazine production, tolling in at 3rd place. With gender magazines being the two above means that i could combine the two audiences to make a music magazine that appeals to both men and women, broadening the scale of my publication.
Music magazines specialise in different types of genre of music ranging from folk to hip-hop. A music magazine has to have a certain specialisation in order for it to sell as people dont listen to every single type of music there is. This has lead me to make a pop rock magazine, appealing to the widest range of music genre there is. Pop stand for the word popular, meaning popular music, with its mainstream style and conventional structure appeals to a vast audience. This audience is of both gender and comprises into the band of 10-30 year olds. But as this is a publication im going to tighten the target audience to 14-30 as a more sophisticated view wont appeal to many below the age of 14, wheras it would appeal to many ages over the age of 14.
This target audience requires my magazine to be up to date with the latst happenings in the pop music world along with the latest fashions for both men and women to coincide with the music scene providing a broader spectrum. "Music, Life, Style" all rolled into one to create One Way Music Magazine, "leading you on the right path to the music scene".

By realizing that is my magazine was on a shop shelf my cumulative audience would be much higher than what my actual amount of readers would be. Therefore before i begin the designing process of my project i need to come to terms with how i could attract an audience from my magazine sitting on a shelf, therefore i'd be able to get some reception analysis on what my target audience really think of a magazine that will strike them to buy it. I am going to comprise a questionnaire to determine what features i should include and how i should set and go about my magazine. By asking people in the specific age boundaries of my target audience both male and female i will be able to comprise a shortlist of what key ideas and features readers would want to see.

Questionaire
1) How important is the title of a music magazine? (1 being lowest, 10 being highest)
1-3
4-7
8-10
The results where 75% chose the bracket 4-7, therefore planning a title that can relate and signify its importance is vital.

2) What attracts you the most when you see a magazine?
the features
the title
the image
The resuts where that 90% chose that the image was the key thing that attracted you most, therefore i need to create a strong image that grabs the younger readers attention.

3) Is pop music something that teenagers are influenced by in the modern day?
yes
no
The results are that 80% of students say that pop music influences their everyday lives, therefore proving that late teens to early 30's is a good age boundary to aim for.

4) By combining a music life and style magazine all in one do you think you would be more likely to buy it?
yes
no
The results were that 80% of students would buy the magazine due to it offering more range rather than just music.

5) What would you most likely subscribe to a music monthly or weekly magazine?
monthly
weekly
The results are that surprisingly 60% of the vote said that monthly would be best due to their being more context to write about.

Therefore by researching and asking my specific target audience i can now begin the designing process by using the information recieved in order to start making my teenage pop / lifestyle music magazine.

Summary of double page spread analysis
  • The title is strong and bold usually running on the top of the page taking up most if not all of one page
  • The images are usually strongly seen on one side of the page where little writing is evident
  • Text is usally never in colour and in black or white to show simplicity in reading it
  • The pages follow colourways strictly to make the layout look proffessional and blend in
  • Space is occupied well and yet can look just as effective using up less space

Analysis Of Double Page Spreads
Double page spreads are usually the home of feature articles. these are a magazines forefront of what they offer and therefore need to be designed to a high standard to attract a reader as he is flicking through the magazine. Background colours, images and titles need to be carefully detailed in order to fit in with the layout of the page. There are usually a few images throughout the two pages so that space is filled and it attracts the readers. These few photos are usually backed up by one large photo that the text is wrapped around to create a stylistic layout. the title can be found anywhere and is usually big taking up a good half on one page in order to make it stand out to an audience. Most music magazines
features feature artists and are mainly interviews or type ups of the artisits topic. The artist would go through a photoshoot to make it authentic to the magazine instead of them using photos of the artist performing to give it that exclusive feel. The music magazines are all in competition with each other so therefore are forced in a sense to conduct exclusive photoshoots in order to have a different image and make it stand out to competitors. These are the traits that im expected to see throughout my analysis.

This article pictured above is taken from a Hip-Hop magazine titled The Source which is an american based production focussing on homegrown artists. The layout is simplistic yet work to great effect by splitting the page into two with the article featured on the left hand side and the image on the right. The left hand sides space is covered effectively by not using much of the top half and creating a bigger, bolder font takes the attention away from that dead space and produces more focus on the bottom half of the page where the attention is required. "The BIG picture" is titled in a pale orange working well with the white modern background and also matching the denim outfit the artist is wearing on the right hand side allowing it to flow. The BIG is produced in a more bolder font giving it a bigger emphasis and working in a comical way as the artist is called "Biggie" due to his size. The title also works well as the picture on the right hand side is big having to take up a whole page
by itself therefore working off nicely.
The writing is produced on a white background and as a personal view i believe this works better than having it overlap and wrap around an image. This way it adds more emphasis on the writing and the picture seperately by not interfeiring with the picture. otherwise it would take more emphasis of the picture not giving it a stronger feel that this article does to it. Most articles have a foreword written in short beneath the tile and i believe this works well in the right context giving the readers some background knowlege of the text produced. This double page spread works well as the contrast of the two sides, one quite and one loud produces an equilibrium that attracts an audience.

This article is taken from Rock Magazine, an american publication focussing on Rock genre. Rock genre traits in a magazine can be found in this article with its black and white colour theme showing a sense of darkness. The page differs from The source i analysed earlier as the whole page is incorporated more by the picture taking up 3/4 of the page. The main part of the picture though is seen on the whole of the right hand side showing that the main picture should be clearly visible and have no main features of it running through the centre line of the magazine. The layout of the text is based on a background with a slant preventing it from a simplistic design and giving it something to stand out. The text is white on black which is two simplistic main colours that are conjunctively used throughout magazine features to make it easier to read. It also ties in with the colourways of the article and the picture itself. The title of the article "American Gothic" is misaligned and slanted text gives it character relating to the magazine genre, rock giving it the stereotype of messy, against the norm type attitude providing it with a sense of mise-en-scene. With the "Gothic" being scribbled and different to "American" gives the sense of against the rules type attitude hence heightening the mise-en-scene thats been put into place.
The image itself is strong and relates to the picture like The Source article also provided. The pictures scene being in a gothic church type building giving it that old, black and white theme that runs throughout the article and also relating to the gothic in the title. Also the man present is pictured as a stereotypical american rock fan with a beard, tattoo and a checkered short sleeve shirt, giving the article a sense of realism about it.

This is an extract from a popular french pop culture magazine. Even though it isnt in English it still holds true to the codes and conventions of a double page spread article. This one differs to the other two that i have analysed as the title runs boldly through both pages and with text on both side and with the picture in the middle also having smaller images alongside.
The background is one colour, a running theme in the pages that i have analysed due to the simplicity to incorporate text and to bolden the text on a plain background being the most effective appearence. The image is bold and stands out giving direct eye contact to readers showing interaction between the two. The font is formidably extensive compared to the other two therefore placing lesser attention on the images yet they still stand out none the less. The text is clearly wrapped to neaten up the article giving off the feel of a newspaper article. Therefore the context of the text must be greater than the last two showing that the other two were brief and there was more input on the appearence. The other images that are on display differ to the norm of the modern day article as they seem bound in a way similiar to a comic strip style. This gives the article an older feel adding to the mise-en-scene of the old stylistic article.

Summary of contents page analysis
  • The title is usually tucked away in the left hand corner giving more room to list features, usually a small font taking up half the page width roughly
  • The page is crammed wit information to give off the sense the magazine is jam packed
  • Images are seperate from one another to show they belong to different features
  • Page numbers beside the features to relate to the number they feature on
  • A boxed out features section that usually runs down the left hand side underneath the contents title and features short hand listings of the features of the magazine

3) Contents -
A contents page is just as important as the Front Cover. It works with the same principles, that being it needs to be eye catching and hopes to "pull in" readers. The main traits that can be seen throughout many publically popular magazine brands is a clear masthead of the contents, showing to readers that the following on the page can be found within the magazine. This basically works in the same way as a magazine title should, ey
e catching and bold in order for readers to view it.
A contents page has many thumbnail pictures
of images that can be found within the pages of the magazine in order to work as a title in a sense to attract an audience. These thumbnail images usually have a number next to them stating the page number that that particular feature can be found on. Many usually have a medium sized subtitle beside them to act as a guide to help readers identify the picture. With larger fonts be
ing used not for readers to identify the image, but to attract readers due to it being a big feature as such. A Feature section is usually run down
the side alongside these images acting as a key for the pictures by matching up the number to find out more about the feature and also showing readers other smaller features that can be found in the magazine. Many publications opt for a crammed fit in a sense to give off to the readers that there is alot in the magazine, leaving the readers feeling pleased with their buy. Its basically a visual representation of what the magazine entails, if the contents page was bare then the reader may feel displeased as he would believe that the magazine would be bare also.

This is the front cover of an NME Music Magazine, a very popular cult British genre that mainly focusses on British bands. The title is layered with an off red to make the "contents" title stand out. This works also with NME's branding logo as the colours are predominantely red and white. The date is cleary visible and is a trademark in a sense of NME's production, showcasing that its a monthly magazine.
Thumbnail images are used with great effect throughout the page, using smaller to larger images to represent the scale of the feature. By doing so it allows for more images and text to take up the size of the page producing more information for the readers to digest. All the images follow the same stylistic layout in that they are all roundly cournered off at the left hand side giving a sense of hose style to the magazine. This is also a stylistic way of interpreting the page number for the features. The largest
thumbnail image is backed up by a large title sizing up bigger than the contents title itself, giving it that special feature effect, attracting readers to view that page. These thumbnails run all the way along to the corners of the magazine leaving no space to waste, creating less blandness which works well to showcase the magazines features.
The Features section is cleary headed with a medium sized subtitle matching the colour coordinates with the masthead producing a flow throughout the page. This is used with the page numbers also and the "Regulars" section,
giving the title more emphasis as the red and white stands out more due to it being backed up in other areas on the page. The features section is ran down alongside the page, only taking up a third of the page, showing to us that the images are the better at attracting readers. The subtitles and information are short and sweet, giving the readers a taste of what the articles about. The subtitles are mainly made up of the bands featued or artists as they would be household names that would attract readers so they know who features where instead of them having to find out themselves. This effectively spoon feeds the readers giving them what they want to know. Another common trai
t of a contexts page is the + sign used extensively throughout the printing world, with the likes of FHM using it as an almost house style effect on every front page. This adds effectiveness to the contexts page, almost trying to wow the audience as the sign acts like they are recieving bonus material in the magazine.
Here is a contents page for a monthly music magazine called "The Brass Herald", a magazine influenced by brass music. A different genre to what the mainstream audience would be attracted to. This is a very selective topic and therefore wouldnt follow suit to the likes of magazines such as FHM, Empire and NME. Although it would hold the characteristics of a contents page and therefore will have a similiar layout.
The oage can be clearly seen as split into two, seen by the different colour contrasts. The contents title is similiar in the simpleness to NME's above yet isnt used to the same effect. The background layer of the masthead spreads out right across the page where the contents title itself only takes up around a half of the page. Whereas NME has pounced on the free space to fill more features in the empty space. This title isnt used to great effect as its too simplistic and doesnt offer any attractiveness to its readers. The font is simple and also its colourways too whereas at least NME has pushed the boat out and used a different shade of red to the primary standard and used a bolder more brighter font.
It uses thumbnails also yet not to great effect giving it no sense of house style or any type of style. Most are the same size and are placed in the same place giving a sense of order yet comes off dull. The page numbers of the feature are listed down the images but are used in different colours and sometimes cannot be depicted well enough due to the background nature of the picture. The features of the magazine are clearly listed down the side of the page in the same red as the title. Some are too prolonged for sub titles, unlike NME's that are short and to the point allowing more room for pictures which are more effective at attracting readers. Not all the subtitles have information given beneath the title therefore creating a distortion in the layout as each thing differs from the next therefore not letting it flow toghether. Some have no information, others a line or even a paragraph giving no layout format, proving distasteful on the eye. One plus is that there is a competition advertisement feature which would attract an audience and it stands out from the norm of the contents page giving it some credability.
All in all the contents page doesnt rate too highly on the attractiveness scale although it does its job of telling readers whats in the magazine. Yet this isnt enough to attract a new audience, something that ive learnt when i start my project is that pictures prove more attractive and insightful that paragraphs telling what the features about.

Q Magazine is a long running rock culture music that focusses on global bands. Its a well known publication and widely recognisable to any non-musical fan. Their contents page has a smart and sophisticated layout that resembles the audience they attract (middle aged music fans, middle/upper class). They use a banner type masthead similiar to "Brass herald" yet they effectively fill up the space to make it less bland by having their titles on the left and the date on the right side. A large image is used of The Courteeners used to put that feature on a bigger scale than the others, letting the audience know its importance in the magazine. A subtitle is used below cutting into the image, running suit in colours to the features section to the left of it still producing the smart outlook by using squaring off information instead of cramming it in. Many magazine use this technique of including one large image just like a front cover to produce more style and just to mix things up abit to the norm of their usual layout. FHM is a prime example of this as they usually use their centerfold model to attract their audience showing them that its one of their attractions of the magazine.
The features section is neatly placed down the left hand side, very much similiar to NME as analysed earlier. It also follows suit to the colourways of Q's branding title to give off a stronger outline as it relates to the title itself. Red is often used in print publications as its a strikingly bold colour that attracts people and is associated with exciting things such as sex and danger. The white background proves modern as the colour is used in small context on the page giving it a modern feel.
The feature strip is broken down by an Oasis Special, being sectioned off to show its feature as being more important than the others. This works well and in effect just like an image would do as it segregates it from the norm layout. It is also cut off by an "every month" feature box similiar to NME's "Regulars" feature that it holds. This title gives off to new readers that these features are exciting and a good read as they carry on to be in the magazine each month giving its own advertisement in a way. Its also given a red banner type title making the red predominantely bolder and gives it that extra character and importance throughout the page. The Q review section at the bottom, although it isn't red it still matches the title banner giving the page a nice colour transaction throughout making it an overall neat page. The inside of the section is held in grey which resembles "The Courteeners" image as a band member is depicted in grey and there is little colour involved making the grey fit in with the colour flow. Yet again the features listed follow the same suit as the other magazines ive analysed, that having a small subtitle followed by a short description alongside a page number making it as easy as possible for readers to navigate the magaizne.

Front cover analysis summary
  • A large masthead that is recognisable and understandable following colourways to match the rest of the page
  • A strong primary image to attract an audience, usually powerful and bold to stand out off the shelf, mostly overlaps the title giving it a less blocky feel
  • Features listed over the image in strong fonts yet the colours arent too overpowering, small features usually in smaller writing and main image getting a seperate font to be recognised
  • Shapes are often used on front covers to seperate the neatness and give it a quirky feel by adding something new to the layout

3) Q Magazine

Q Magazine is a publicly well known magazine. It follows the idea that less is more and uses simplistic colourways. By using white for a background it creates a modern look towards the magazine. The main picture is of "Metallica" a famous rock band formulaed in America, widening the audience globally. The main picture overlaps the magazines title, telling us that it's a widely recognisable production. The bands are dressed in dark colours to make them stand out from the white background. The lead singer is in a powerful stance in the middle of the group showing his highly recognisable status, with his arms folded it gives him a sense of authority. All of the band members are focussing on the camera, therefore interacting with the readers. The use of red in music magazines is widely used, giving it a bold attractiveness. "The loud issue" subtitle overlaps the "Q" magazine title giving it house style. The use of yellow to embedden it contrasts the red giving it a striking appearence that would attract an audience, giving it importance. The barcode is placed under the title which differs from the other magazines with it usually being in the bottom right hand corner. This therefore makes it neatly tucked away and out of the way, yet Q have opted for it under the title. The reoccuring red is used throughout in the subtitles which makes it stand out against the background. "Metallica" can be seen bang in the middle with a grey coloured font making it similiar with the plain black photo shoot. "175 albums reviewed" resembles the layout of the title, with a white lining and a red square text box to make it stand out. The red used in many of the subtitles are all depicted in red due to it being a band (Foo Fighters) and a figure (Harry Potter). This magazine cover works well as its simplistic and with the use of a white, modern background the reader is attracted to the stand out subtitles boldenned in red. The photo works well as its bang in the middle and the figures are used in an authorative stance, by looking at the camera the band members interact with the audience therefore relating them to the magazine.

2) NME Magzine

The NME music magazine focusses on the mainstream music of Britain, being Indie and and Rock. The title is big, bold and loud. Using red gives the title more attention therefore attracting thew audience to the title. With a band members hair just covering the edge of the title it gives it a sense of house-style by overlapping the title, a common trait in the genetic conventions of a music magazine. The white lining of the title gives it extra atractiveness and makes it jump out of the page following the plain black background. The black and white colourway is a resemblence of rock, showing a darkness about their music genre and gives it a plain, simplistic vibe, resembling the music genre. The split page idea gives the audience two deterances from the title, the main picture and the top half focussing on a special feature edition on "the worlds greatest rock festival". This top-half sections layout is crammed into a small space, giving it a music poster type theme. As its advertising the festivals it works well as it follows its functions. The bands are listed toghether down the side and a side picture of the event can be seen. The Reading and Leeds festival subtitles have red fuzz around them making them stand out and also is their own logo for the event. The focus then moves onto the main pictures of the page, with a white background for simplicity, the page is torn into three. Each showing the lead singer of The Killers, an american rock band. The subtitle reads "I'm having a personality crisis right now...", the readers now know why the page has been torn into three, each with a picture of the same person acting in wierd situations. The title "The Killers" is showed below the lead singers head, obviously the face is the main attraction as a face is recognisable. Its big, bold, white title stands larger than the magazine title itself and runs through the middle of the page. This also gives it a music festival poster by portraying them as the "headliners" if it were. The "V-festival" logo can be seen in the bottom left corner and is sectioned off by a running white strip, using red it follows suit to the magazine colour codes and again makes it stand out. Another band name, "The Verve" is used in red also amongst a white background to stand it out as another subtitle and main feature of the magazine. From the magazine research on music magazines its easy to see that music stars/bands are listed instead of the feature topic so that readers recognise if their favourite bands are in the magazine. This is used as its simplistic and tones down the front cover, giving off more attraction to the main focus, the cover and title.

The Analysis of similiar media texts

1) XXL MAGAZINE

XXL magazine is primarily a rap / hip hop magazine with its target audience specifically appealing to the young black american society. The rap genre has certain individualistic ideals that create the music as a whole, appealing to those with a specific taste in the genre. The main picture of Nas overlapps the title resembling house style, portraying the magazine as a well known production as people would recognise the few showing words of the title and colour functions. The background colour is grey, matching the main pictures representation as it depicts "Nas" with a stern face showing anger. This is used in conjunction with the background colour to produce "attitude", relating it to what the rap industry is about. This focusses on the meaning of the magazine and gives the reader an insight into what the magazine entails. Mise en Scene is delivered as "Nas" is supporting a massive silver chain with thick links to showcase his wealth and links him to a sense of superiority, again relating to the hip-hop genre. A black hoody relates to the youth of today by resembling a sense of "street credit" and an aura of toughness. A sub title, "NAS" is used to present who he is and is the same colourway as the background picture as this follows suit to the colourways used to give the cover order. Red is used throughout as its a stand out colour and people relate red to anger and attitude, a reoccuring theme running throughout hip hop music. The red also gives it an american feel by using it in conjunction with white to relate it to the colour wyas of the american flag, as hip hop originated in south america. The slogan "hip-hop on a higher level" relates to the title as its "XXL" meaning extra extra large, a catchy yet simplistic slogan. The layout of the subtitles follows suit to the genetic codes of a magazine front cover layout. With the subtitles being layed out on the sides of the page it attracts the audience to the main focus, the picture. The "NAS" is overlapping the bottom of the picture to show that the picture is of "NAS". The rappers names are embedded in bold writing to stand out, making them easier for audiences to depict whoose involved in the magazine features. A question is headed to the audience, "What has the internet done to Hip-Hop" to involve the audience and gives a que that the magazine will awnser this question, a common trait that magazine covers resemble. The barcode is neatly tucked away in the bottom right hand corner to take it away from the attraction of the front cover itself. This magazine cover relates to the specifics of the genetic conventions of a music magazine, with a main picture taking up most of the space, subtitles following down the side of the page and with the main picture having its own individual subtitle to tell the uadience who it is, this magazine cover works well and would stand out on a stores shelf with its bold titles and specific colourways.
